GB's YouTube page is now including offer codes towards game purchases on the description of Quick Looks. How do you feel about this?
Main Post:
I saw Jess post about this on Twitter (the posts were deleted soon after), which alerted me to this new development. It seems GB is now including referral codes towards Fanatical, a Steam key resell outlet (owned by Fandom, current GB owners), in video description.
In the since deleted tweets, Jess defended the decision - aligning it to the way the podcast has similar offer codes for other services. Naturally, some people have taken issue with this practice and the comparison.
Personally, I want to try see both sides of the argument. Referral codes are a BIG way online media has been able to stay afloat in the current era. If you've ever wondered why every media outlet makes dozens of "best Black Friday deals" posts over the next few weeks - it's all about getting those referral clicks. Hell, it's probably bought Wario64 a few houses by now. Like it or not, this is the business. You'd be hard pressed to find an outlet not doing it to some extent.
But of course, this isn't exactly a defence. The comparison of these offer codes to a podcast discount code on boner pills or stamps is an obviously flawed one. If GB starts enthusiastically endorsing stamps and then they drop an offer code - the dynamic is pretty obvious. If they give better-than-expected impressions to a Sonic game and then drop an offer code... That's a much more questionable arrangement. Personally, I trust the people on this site to not have the financial connection cloud their opinions of a title. But I cannot blame anyone for thinking this is an unacceptable breach of audience confidence.
How do you feel? Try and keep discussion civil. This feels like something that could snowball into outrage very, very easily.
